Cooking an Up-pha-lum is simple and can be done in three delicious ways depending on your preference:

  1. Deep-Frying (My personal favorite):
  • Heat oil in a deep pan or vessel on medium-high heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, gently slide the Up-pha-lum in.
  • Lightly press it down with a spatula.
  • It will puff up quickly! Press the edges to ensure it cooks evenly.
  • Once golden and crispy, remove from the oil and drain on a paper towel.
  1. Microwaving:
  • Place the Up-pha-lum on a microwave-safe plate.
  • For extra crispiness, optionally brush with water or a little oil.
  • Microwave on high for 20-60 seconds (depending on your microwave’s power) until it puffs up and turns crispy.
  1. Baking:
  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Optionally, brush the Up-pha-lum with water or oil for added texture.
  • Place it on a baking sheet and bake for 1-5 minutes, or until it crisps up.

Tip: Always store your Up-pha-lums in an airtight container between kitchen tissues, or enjoy them immediately for the best flavour and crunch!
